In Taito's Groove Coaster players follow a twisting and turning path through over 15 musical stages, tapping anywhere on the touch screen when their avatar crosses paths with a beat. It's simple, but the presentation and execution elevate this simple tapping action into something very special. Groove Coaster has an excellent retro-futuristic visual style, and the soundtrack is a great mix of thumping beats and downtempo funky jazz.

There are also excellent remixed tunes from Arkanoid and Space Invaders for those of you old-school nerds scoring at home. It isn't initially apparent where Groove Coaster's challenge will come from. In the first few stages, the pre-set path (the 'coaster') that the player's avatar follows is simple, making it easy to see the beats and tap them all in time with the music. But these coasters ramp up in complexity quickly. Right-angle turns, rapid downward spirals and other coaster twists and turns make it much more challenging to visually predict when and where the next beat will be. This line-riding 'coaster' premise is more than just a gimmick – it is a great way to display music visually. The beat-heavy hip-hop tracks are full of sharp angle turns while the flowing, slower music pieces feature visual tracks that undulate lazily.
Later tracks ratchet the complexity up by introducing more touch-controlled gestures than just tapping, including 'scratching' a finger back and forth and swiping in specific directions. I did notice that these gestures would occasionally not register correctly, which can be frustrating when it ends a lengthy combo, but it never significantly detracted from the experience. Groove Coaster is a ton of fun to play, and feels like it will never get old. The tight relationship between the visuals and the music allows each and every track to feel distinct – a detail that many other rhythm games struggle with. Each stage has three difficulty modes available, with Game Center leaderboards for the competitive types.
Facebook integration is also included. For the perfectionists out there, tracks completed almost perfectly can be S-ranked, although there is no reward for the feat beyond bragging rights. A wide selection of extras further flesh out the package, including a playable credits sequence and a variety of music visualizers. Groove Coaster is in the App Store now for the introductory price of $0.99.
Monday, August 8th the price will rise to $2.99.

Hey all, I played Groove Coaster at the local Round 1 for the first time last week and instantly fell in love.
Went back, bought a Nesica card, loved how everything is saved to it and the online functionality. I just finished registering it and had a few quesitons. . Where is the music shop?
I found the Avatar, item, sound, message shop in the drop down menu but can't seem to find the one to buy new songs. Is real currency involved or only the GC points? I just registered and it said I had 20,000. I want to get a new avatar and some songs. Do I use those points?. Bonus: this guy at the cabinet next to me was playing Senbozakura. Is that a buyable song??
I'm not the best with song titles with everything being in a foreign language. Mainly going off the thumbnails lol Thanks all!
